Welcome All

Welcome all.. :D

As you can see, we now have different areas open for all to use. The good folks here were kind enough to open some new forums so we can all share ideas, ask questions or for just posting some useful information that might benefit someone else.

Anyway, I'm a part time collector. Been collecting off and on for 35 years.

Hope to see some new faces soon.

Antiques???

Postby mylittleshops on Mon Sep 07, 2009 5:07 pm

Is there an agreed table of things that can be classified as Antiques when they reach a certain age?

Is there a Trade Association that has set time lines on various items from Silver Jewellery, Dolls, Cups and Saucers, Sewing Machines and all the other items sometimes called Antiques and sometimes called Vintage?

Some set rules or strong guidelines would be a great help :!:

There doesn't seem to be a strict definition of the term "antique". Probably if the item is over 100 years old it can safely be described as an antique, but practice seems to vary between different collecting interests. For instance, I have never heard a postage stamp described as antique, even if it 140 years or more old! Probably the safest thing is to see what the leading body (if there is one) for each collecting speciality says on the subject. But then I guess there would be variations between countries. If the approximate age or age band is given for an item, then I don't see that a purchaser could object whether you describe the item as antique or not. :)
